As part of our drive to nurture innovation and excellence, ITI are proud to once again, celebrate the next generation of computer science engineers from Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen.

The company routinely sponsors the Best Honours Project in Software Engineering for RGU’s School of Computing Science and Digital Media. The award recognises students’ achievements in creating high-quality software applications that are not only well-engineered, but relevant and applicable in real-life scenarios, exemplifying ITI’s mission to use technology to make a tangible difference to the world.

The 2021 winner, Jack Sears, delivered a solution to an ongoing challenge at the University itself. By investigating the benefits and limitations of alternative timetabling algorithms, then applying artificial intelligence techniques, Jack created an application which streamlines the process of scheduling all courses into an optimised, University-wide timetable; an otherwise tedious and inefficient process that can take days to undertake manually.

This year’s awards ceremony saw ITI’s Tim MacLaren presenting Jack with his well-deserved prize virtually, via video recording. Tim, who heads up the company’s Digital Operations Centre of Excellence and Support Hub in Aberdeen, said: “I can see real value in the work Jack has done to not only benefit the University, but other scheduling problems such as resource management.  I’m looking forward to seeing how the University use Jack’s algorithm’s and how it helps them plan out future course schedules.”
